Migraine Headache Treatment for Different Migraine Headaches

Edit Article |

When we mention migraine headache treatment, we open a Pandora’s box. There are different migraine treatments for different types of headaches, and some of the same migraine medications are also standard treatment for different types of migraines.

If your one of the lucky ones that has a migraine occasionally “maybe lucky wasn’t the best word to use, but many suffer every day” something as simple as Excedrin migraine or Advil migraine, with a few hours lying down in a quite room may be all you need.

But if your migraines are frequent, one a week of so, they need appropriate treatment.

First, find a headache specialist as close to your home as you can. Your probably going to a doctor or a neurologist now, “notice I said neurologist” and I hate to break the news, but all are not headache specialist.

Even headache specialist sometimes make the wrong call, and migraine sufferers still suffer. (You may be the best doctor your head knows.)

You should read, and study headache and migraines until you are quite familiar with them. Keeping something as simple as a diary may not only help you,  but will be of great benefit for your doctors assessments, and treatment of your migraines and headaches.

Many migraine sufferers have something that triggers their migraines, and headaches. (Foods and beverages.) If you make a connection, you could very well have migraine relief.

If you have a mixed headache syndrome as many do, your migraine headache treatment will be preventive medicines to decrease your migraine attacks, and abortive medicine for the relief of your pain after you get your migraine.

Also diet, exercise, stress reduction, and biofeedback may help your migraine and headache attacks.

As you know, your migraine headache treatment plan  can be entirely different from someone else’s.

I add this to a few of our pages. Don’t fall for the, I’ll just take a pain pill for the pain routine because you could end up with chronic daily headache. And you don’t want that.

Also, many migraine sufferers have refractory migraine headaches, these are the ones that don’t respond to the usual methods of migraine treatment. You could have a range of organic problems. Your neck (facets or disk)could be causing your  headaches, or your sinuses,and a few more issues going on.

In many cases, if your only having your migraine symptoms treated, you will not find relief until the cause is found. This is where the best headache specialist will prevail.

(Migraine headache treatment guidelines regarding acute treatment of migraine have been issued by the U.S. Headache Consortium. The majority of the evidence on which these guidelines are based was developed in clinical trials that excluded people that had refractory or chronic migraine. And for this reason, acute treatment decisions in refractory migraine involve a substantial amount of expert, clinical  judgement because the high quality evidence needed to guide therapy does not yet exist.)

In other words this is where you have to find the best for your migraine help, if you have an ”unmanageable” refractory migraine headache.

Your migraine headache treatment could range from Advil for mild headaches to topamax, maybe a antidepressant, to blood pressure medicine for a preventive migraine treatment plan.”This is just an example.”

Abortives, such as the class of Triptans for a migraine in progress, are given to many migraine sufferers.

Even some type of migraine surgery for an organic problem that is causing your pain will help many.

If your one of the 28,000,000 migraine sufferers in the USA alone that can find the cause of your migraines, your migraine treatment will be much easier. And as we said above, some headache specialist will shoot for the cause of your migraines and headaches, where as many doctors will treat with the tested, and tried methods of migraine treatments that may not give you more than temporary relief.

If you suffer with migraines we hope you find relief.

All the best.

Migraine usually affects people 18 and older. It tends to recur periodically but what really causes migraines is not well understood. The attack lasts couple of hours to several days and has a tendency to relapse. Even after the pain is gone, mild sensation could lasts for weeks. In some cases, attacks can disappear for weeks, months, or even years. All drugs are dangerous. Before a person suffering with a migraine headache takes an over-the-counter medication they should be asking the question “Is the possible benefit worth the risk of taking that drug?” William Osler, M.D. once said “The person who takes medicine must recover twice; once from the disease and once from the medicine.” Sadly, this can be all too true.

Migraine Relief

The most common over the counter and prescription drugs used to treat both tension headaches as well as migraine headaches are aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol is the best example), ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil are commonly known ibuprofen brands,) or naproxen. Three other pharmaceutical products that have had limited success in the treatment of migraines are primarily prescription medications. These migraine treatments include ergotamine tartrate, and sumatriptan. The third, extra-strength Excedrin is, of course, available over the counter. Excedrin includes caffeine. Caffeine has shown to be of considerable help with both tension headaches as well as migraines.

Types of Migraines

Various types of migraine are abdominal, basilar, complicated, hemiplegic, nocturnal, and cyclic migraine syndrome.

Abdominal migraine is also known as periodic syndrome which is common among children. It typically occurs to those have it in their heredity and this type may lead to a classic migraine.

Basilar migraine, also called Bickerstaff’s syndrome, typically affects adolescent women. This occurs when migraine obstructs the circulation the back part of the neck or brain.

Hemiplegic migraine is the rarest among all types but one of the most severe. Its symptoms include temporary paralysis of the motor function and obstructions in the sensory system on a certain side of the body.

Migraine Prevention

Migraine headaches are a destructive part of life for nearly 11 out of 100 people. During migraine episodes, they can barely function. They curtail daily activities, and all of life seems distorted. Between episodes, they may feel anxious about the next one, and wish for some form of migraine prevention. Although migraines seem to run in families, migraine prevention does not always run in the same course. For some migraineurs, prevention is as simple as changing a few habits. For others, migraine prevention seems to require strong medication.

What are Painless Migraine Episodes?

By Fioricet now

Anna Hart asked:

What Are Painless Migraine Episodes?

Most people think of a migraine as excruciating pain, but a migraine episode is far more than pain. Migraines typically have four stages: pre-headache, aura, headache, and post-headache. Millions of people globally suffer from these full-blown, 4-stage migraines – but a minority experience painless episodes. So what are painless migraine episodes?

Technically, there is no such thing as a painless migraine. That is, if you go by the International Headache Society’s (IHS) Guidelines for diagnosis and classification of headache disorders. Yet your physician may tell you that yours is a painless migraine. He or she may call it a painless, optical migraine.

What are painless migraine episodes?

The answer is in the question. A painless migraine is a migraine episode that begins with the typical pre-headache stage, progresses to the aura phase of a migraine attack, and then stops short. It skips the headache phase – the pain.

If you have a painless migraine, you have the visual symptoms of the aura and other symptoms of a migraine without the headache. Such a migraine would usually be termed a migraine with aura. A physician following the IHS guidelines would describe it as “acephalgic” – meaning “without headache.”

Pre-headache – Phase #1

The pre-headache phase is sometimes referred to as the prodrome. This is where your painless migraine episode begins. You may enter this stage hours or even days before what would normally be recognized as a migraine episode.

Recognizing the prodrome can be very helpful to you, since it is a warning. It is telling you that migraine changes are beginning to take place. How do you know? You may have some or all of the following symptoms.

* constipation

* diarrhea

* depression

* fatigue

* food cravings

* frequent urination

* irritability

* neck muscle stiffness

Aura – Phase #2

As your painless migraine progresses, you enter phase #2 – the aura. This familiar phase lasts less than an hour in most cases, but can be terrifying. Some of the bizarre symptoms and effects of the aura are believed to have influenced Lewis Carroll as he wrote “Alice in Wonderland.”

Most people think of aura as being only visual: zigzag lines, spots in front of your eyes, or flashing lights. They believe the aura phase affects only the eyes. This may explain the physician’s term, “painless, optical migraine.”

It is true that these are typical aura symptoms, but the aura phase has many symptoms, including:

* auditory hallucinations – you hear sounds that aren’t there

* confusion in thinking – things aren’t making sense

* decrease in your hearing ability

* difficult finding the words you want

* dizziness

* increased feel and touch – or reduced feel and touch

* olfactory hallucinations – you smell odors that aren’t there

* partial paralysis

* sight loss – partial or blurry vision

* tingling or numbness of your face

* visual hallucinations – you see sights that aren’t there: flashing bright lights, wavy lines, spots, or zigzag lines

If you have a painless migraine, your episode stops here. You do not go on to experience the throbbing pain.

Other terms used for a painless migraine include “migraine equivalent,” “silent migraine,” and “sans-migraine.” Even if you think yours is a painless migraine, consult with your health-care provider to be sure. Other serious conditions may be present.

Painless migraine episodes can be prevented in some cases, while others can be treated effectively. Turn your next painless migraine into a non-event.
