Ninety seven percent of people have had a debilitating headache at one point or another and over seventy percent of us suffer from chronic headaches. Interestingly enough, there are many techniques that we can use – whether they are self massage techniques or techniques used by registered massage therapists.

There are five techniques that are most common in the treatment and prevention of migraine headaches, these are; temple massaging, forehead massaging, forehead pulling and tapping on the forehead and manipulating the nose and cheekbones. Further, I will explain each of these techniques and the benefits that come with each of these, below.

When suffering from a sinus headache you can fare well by starting with fingers applying pressure, using the thumbs to apply pressure outwards, towards the cheekbones. This should be done with sides at once, starting at the nasal passage and moving out towards the cheekbones. This stimulates the sinuses, and can decrease the pain and pressure felt by sinus headaches. As well, this can stimulate the nasal passage, and increase production from the sinuses, assisting in clearing.

Should a headache reside in the temples it can be helpful to apply direct pressure with the thumbs. This is varied in using circular motions throughout the temples, and should be used for as long as seven to ten seconds. You can use the thumbs, or three of the fingers to apply direct and even pressure. This is one of the most popular self massage techniques for headaches, and has the best results.

By manipulating the skin that is under the eyebrows you can change the face of a headache. Use your thumb and forefinger to pull the skin that lies under the eyebrow away from the face. This assists the blood flow to be removed from where the headache resides, decreasing in the pounding sensation. Do not pull too hard, as this could irritate the headache – hold for four to six seconds for optimal results.

Apply steady pressure to the bridge of the nose, where the nose meets the forehead. This steady pressure assists in decreasing the pressure on the head. As with many other techniques, firm and steady pressure is important in this massage for headaches technique.

At a retreat last year, I was taught a new technique for dealing with a headache. I had a terrible headache at the retreat and it seemed to be right in the front of my head. An elderly man consulted me and began to tap my forehead, gently. This gentle tapping with his index finger soothed my headache instantly.

With these natural self-massage techniques the statistic of every ten seconds an adult within the United States arrives at the emergency room with a headache can be decreased, as well as the dependence on medication for headache pain. It’s surprising how clearly we can recall getting hurt. Years later, we can recount our first fall from a too-tempting tree, a bee-sting, the birth of a child. We can even tell humorous stories about those events because the pain was transient – it passed.

But many illnesses and conditions can make pain a daily visitor, interfering with our jobs, family lives, even sleep. Even ancient people tried to relieve the devastation of chronic pain using surgeries and medicinal herbs. By the 1800s, people started using narcotics (drugs like opium) to reduce pain. Even the narcotic heroin was originally developed as a pain medication! But many narcotics were found to be addictive, to interfere with digestion and mood, and even to slow or stop breathing!

Fortunately for us, modern research has uncovered safer pain-relief drugs for chronic conditions. One of these drugs is Ultram (the generic drug Ultram contains is called tramadol). Ultram’s effect on your body is similar to the effect of narcotics and is as effective in relieving pain. But since it isn’t a narcotic, it doesn’t have as many of the side-effects which have made medical narcotic use so dangerous.

Ultram can help manage pain from many sources, just like comic-book superheroes can foil thieves, kidnappers, and polluters! The other effects of Ultram tend to be mild and transient. You might notice dizziness, drowsiness, stomach or intestinal distress (usually constipation). People taking Ultram are discouraged from driving – driving under it’s influence is a bit like driving after having a few drinks. Ultram requires a prescription, so while you’re talking with your doctor about using it, schedule a regular time to discuss any side-effects or difficulties you experience while on this medication.

Control the Medication – Don’t Let It Control You

How can you benefit from this drug while minimizing its risks? First, when deciding whether to start on Ultram, be candid with your physician about any dependence issues with alcohol or other drugs you’ve had. People who have struggled with other addictions may be more susceptible to Ultram dependence. Remember – your physician is on your side and telling her about your history will help her tailor pain medications to your needs!

Second, be aware that Ultram is pretty powerful stuff and treat it with respect! Any change in dose should be discussed with your doctor; mild drowsiness at one dose can become a deadly blackout in another. Never “lend” this drug to a friend, even if he’s in great pain – what works for you could be fatal for him.

Thirdly, make sure that you tell your physician about other drugs you’re taking: many drugs (including alcohol and over-the-counter medications) can enhance the effect of Ultram, making it act like you’re taking a much bigger dose.

These sound like dire warnings, but remember: by working with your physician, this drug can be a powerful tool to help you reach the active, pain-free life you were meant to have.
